Adobe Photoshop Workshop

The Adobe Photoshop workshop was organized by the Maker Girls department to expose students to image editing and photo retouching. Adobe Photoshop is a tool for pursuers in the graphic and designs field used for image editing, creating image compositions and adding effects.

The workshop was held on the evening of 27th of November 2019 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Held at EEK3 of the School of Electrical and Electronic engineeringextensive lessons were conducted by tutors of the workshops throughout the workshop. The beginner level Photoshop workshop targeted groups of students with little or no prior experience with the Photoshop software.

The workshop was preceded by one main tutor and several other tutors from the Maker Girls department that assisted participants upfront if any ambiguity arose. The event not only aimed to expose the attendees to the interface and fundamental aspects of Photoshop, but also enabled them to step up their creativity with various masking, layering and sharpening techniques.

A total of 25 students had attended this workshop from various schools within the engineering campus. The workshop kicked off with a slideshow introduction of the fundamental Photoshop’s interface, layouts and toolboxes. The workshop then proceeded with the hands-on activities. A total of 5 tasks with increasing levels of complexities was prepared. Each of these tasks covered techniques such as overlays, curves, dodging and burning, etc. The workshop was very much lively as many of the participants brought forward many doubts and questions regarding how certain effects were created. Many of the participants were intrigued by the ability to created 3D effects and dispersed effects with various brushes.

The tutors had amicably resolved most dubiety by explaining the process and by demonstrating the steps. The workshop ended on a positive note with some participants expressing their willingness to attend future workshops. A module and solution manual were provided to the participants upon completion of this workshop. Many found this workshop particularly enriching as the unknown skills that are often overlooked by users are demonstrated in this workshop. Besides, the participants, the undergraduate students of engineering campus had gotten a thorough understanding of how to use Adobe Photoshop for fun or as a career opportunity. This will highly benefit the targeted group of participants.

Overall, this event was a success albeit a minor setbacks met prior to workshop commencement. We look forward to more events and projects for the satisfaction of the students of USM Engineering campus. Hopefully, we are able to open our workshops on a much bigger scale to the participants beyond USM Engineering campus.
